5 Plumbing Tips to Consider Before Vacation
When you go on vacation, you want to return to your home without having to deal with any plumbing problems when you get back. One of the best ways to prevent damage to your home while you are on vacation is to make a list of things you need to do to make your home vacation ready, which is why we compiled a list of plumbing tips to consider.
Five plumbing tips to consider before going on vacation
1. Check the water heater
One of the most important things to do before going on vacation is to check the water heater for any potential problems if you do not want to return to a flooded house. Make sure you look for signs of corrosion, which can be a sign that there is a leak. If you are not sure what to look for, you can have a professional come and take a look at it to be on the safe side.
2. Inspect washing machine hoses
Washing machine hoses get worn over time and begin to leak gradually. To avoid coming back home to a puddle of water, you should check the hoses connected to your washing machine to make sure they are not leaking or damaged. If you notice any damage on the hoses, make sure you replace them before you leave.
3. Clean drains
If you do not want to come home to an unpleasant smell, make sure you clean your sink drains before you leave. Clean out the remaining food particles in your sink by running water after using the garbage disposal. If you want the house to smell fresh when you return, you can sprinkle baking soda down your sink drains, as well as lemon juice.
4. Turn off your water supply
If you want to limit the odds of having water damage while you are on vacation, turning off the main water valve is your safest bet. By turning the valve off, you save yourself a little money and don’t have to worry about your home getting flooded while you are away. You should also turn on all the faucets to drain the remaining water out of them. If you do not know where the main water valve in your home is, you can have a plumbing professional turn it off for you.
5. Leave emergency plumbing contact information
If you have someone house-sitting for you or have someone coming in to check on the house periodically, you should make sure to leave them with the number of your plumber in case there are any plumbing emergencies while you are away. Doing this allows you to have a professional you trust working on your home instead of an unknown plumber.
Water damage to your home can end up costing you a lot of money, depending on how flooded your house gets. If you are planning to take a vacation anytime soon, make sure you use the tips provided to avoid having to deal with a disaster when you return.
